Seventh official Audubon Christmas Bird Count: Tikal (GMTK) 2017

A total of 47 observers in 9 groups gathered for the seventh Christmas Bird Count in the Tikal National Park, conducted on 15 December 2017. Weather was favorable, with cloud cover 0-100% and little or no wind.

A total of 2085 birds of 177 species was recorded. In addition, five more species were observed during the count week. The most abundant species with at least 25 detected individuals were (in descending order of abundance): Montezuma Oropendola, Lesser Greenlet, Stub-tailed Spadebill, Wood Thrush, Red-throated Ant-Tanager, Magnolia Warbler, Northern Schiffornis, Gray Catbird, Northern Bentbill, Brown Jay, Black-throated Shrike-Tanager, Spot-breasted Wren, Melodious Blackbird, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Ivory-billed Woodcreeper, Red-lored Parrot, Kentucky Warbler, Collared Aracari, White-crowned Parrot, and Squirrel Cuckoo.

Noteworthy records included a Swainson's Warbler, an immature Gray-headed Kite, and a pair of Orange-breasted Falcon.

The Tikal National Park is part of the Maya-Lacandon Important Bird Area (IBA GT001) and this Christmas Bird Count helps to monitor bird populations in this IBA.
