Christmas Bird Count: Antigua 2013

The fifth CBC Antigua Guatemala took place on 27 December 2013. A total of 15 observers in three groups counted birds in in Finca El Pilar, Finca Filadelfia, and at Cerro Alux.

A total of 962 birds of 117 species was detected. In addition, two more species were recorded during the count week. The most abundant birds with at least 20 detected individuals were (in descending order of abundance): Band-tailed Pigeon, Black-capped Swallow, Great-tailed Grackle, Bushy-crested Jay, Gray Silky-flycatcher, Bushtit, Townsend's Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Brown-backed Solitaire, Band-backed Wren, White-eared Hummingbird, Black Vulture, and Pacific Parakeet.

Seven species were recorded for the first time in the Antigua Guatemala CBC: Barred Parakeet, White-throated Swift, Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner, Masked Tityra, Swainson's Thrush, White-throated Thrush, and Yellow-billed Cacique. Several range-restricted bird species of the north Central American highlands were recorded during the CBC, including Rufous Sabrewing, Green-throated Mountain-gem, Wine-throated Hummingbird, Blue-throated Motmot, Bushy-crested Jay, Black-capped Swallow, Rufous-browed Wren, Rufous-collared Robin, and Blue-and-white Mockingbird.

Antigua is part of the Antigua Guatemala Important Bird Area (IBA GT016) and this Christmas Bird Count helps to monitor bird populations in this IBA.

It follows a list of species and numbers of individuals recorded during the fifth Christmas Bird Count in Antigua Guatemala (Nomenclature according to AOU 1998 and supplements, most recent update AOU 2013). Species recorded during the count week are marked with (cw).
