Monthly visits to Chelemhá for monitoring and birding tours produced several noteworthy bird observations. Among new species records for the reserve was a Pheasant Cuckoo which was heard at the unusual high elevation of 2300 m in March 2008. The first Ruby-throated Hummingbird was recorded in November. The first fall record of Golden-cheeked Warbler was made in September 2008. In the same month a vagrant immature Black-vented Oriole was seen in secondary scrub.

Hummingbird feeders at the Chelemhá Lodge attracted eight species: Garnet and Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, Green-throated Mountain-gem, White-eared, Magnificent, and Azure-crowned Hummingbird, Violet Sabrewing, and Green Violet-ear. At times there were five species at the same time at one feeder. The abundance of some species varied seasonally. Green Violet-ears were most common during the northern summer, and Garnet-throated Hummingbirds from late fall to summer. Females and young males of the tiny Wine-throated Hummingbird were seen feeding at blooming Fuchsia arborescens shrubs around the lodge, but never at the feeders. This species was best seen during visits to one of the leks near the mountain ridge.
Blue-throated Motmots can be seen in Chelemhá in both the cloud forest and the adjacent secondary scrub, but they were best seen right from the balcony of the Chelemhá lodge. A pair was nesting near the lodge and a recently fledged young was seen on a rainy day in the secondary forest around the lodge.
In 2008 we found three nests of Highland Guan along the forest trails. Resplendent Quetzals were seen at their nesting trees from April to June. Fulvous Owl was seen monthly, at day roosts and also at night.
